Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza defeated Serena Williams in straight sets today at Roland Garros, claiming her first career Grand Slam title and denying Williams her 22nd.

The 7-5, 6-4 victory was the first French Open title for a Spaniard since Arantxa Sánchez Vicario beat Monica Seles in 1988, and kept Serena Williams one championship behind all-time career leader Steffi Graf. It drops her career record in Grand Slam finals to 21-6, which is still incredible. The win avenged Muguruza’s 6-4, 6-4 loss to Serena at last year’s Wimbledon final.
